 | What is eLearning? eLearning or CBT (computer-based training) refers to the use of courses or training delivered through an electronic medium. Practically, it is training delivered on a computer. Advantages of eLearning Compared to traditional (paper-based) courses, eLearning offers several advantages: - use of multimedia to include audio narration or video clips where appropriate to enhance content or interest
- use of animation to explain processes
- controlled simulations let a user interact and practise what is being taught
- easy navigation through the course by means of outlines and hyperlinks
- use of popups to provide added details on selected terms or concepts
- quizzes integrated with the course monitor the learner's progress and provide appropriate feedback
Although eLearning does not replace instructor-led training, it does offer some advantages in selected areas: - self-paced and easily fits into the learner's schedule
- very cost effective
- can be easily repeated as a refresher or for reinforcement
- ideal in situations where turnover may be high and training on the same topic is required frequently or repeatedly
